Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious health condition that affects 29 million people in the United States, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control. Diabetes care is challenging and requires very specific measures. In people without diabetes, the pancreas makes a hormone called insulin. The body uses this insulin to help sugar move out of the bloodstream and into the body’s cells. The cells then use the sugar to produce energy. People with diabetes, however, either don’t produce enough insulin or fail to use insulin effectively. As a result, too much sugar stays in the blood.

Doctors break diabetes down into three categories. The first is type 1 diabetes. Most commonly diagnosed in children, type 1 diabetes occurs when the body creates too little insulin or none at all. People with type 2 diabetes produce adequate amounts of insulin, but their bodies fail to use it properly. Women can also develop gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is marked by high blood sugar levels during pregnancy and often subsides after delivery. Type 1 and 2 diabetes, however, are chronic conditions that doctors can control but not cure. All three types of diabetes produce similar symptoms, including the following:

  • Blurred vision
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Insatiable hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
